I saw a TikTok where a guy claimed that, in reality, the home you own is actually owned by the government. His argument was that if you stop paying your annual property taxes, the government will eventually take your home. While this statement is somewhat exaggerated, as property taxes are typically quite low, it does highlight a point. If you don't have the money to pay the tax (which is usually manageable unless you own an incredibly large mansion), it likely won't matter immediately, and the process before the government takes your house could take years. However, it's unsettling to realize that even if your house is fully paid off, you don't own it 100%.
